It’s almost physically uncomfortable. Like, there’s nothing wrong with any of my vehicles (well, the Buick is still having fuel issues), but I so want to get rid of some or all of them and get something else. How do you people deal with it? And how do you folks who keep the same vehicle for 5-10 years or more do it?

I think about how much depreciation I would have to eat to get something else and realize that I can’t bear squandering that.

i dont. in six years of being able to drive (got license at 16) i have had as of friday 9 different vehicles

I’ve had 4 in the last year, and looking for the next, don’t ask me. Fortunately I have broken even or made some on each so my wife lets me keep doing it.

I get really anxious and stressed out over change. Even if it is good change, it'll throw me for a loop. I had my last car for over six years and cried when I traded it. Not gonna lie. It was hard. But I love the new one even more and someday when it is time for it to go, I'll repeat the process. But, my fear of change, while not healthy, does keep me from trading cars much!

In the past I changed cars almost every year. Then GA. decided to add a 7% tax on private party sales, so it’s not as easy as before. I always bought from individuals, and would lose little (sometimes nothing) driving a car for a year. They tax you 7% when you get a tag/transfer a tag based on whatever their database says the vehicle is worth.

Combine that with the fact that most new cars don’t entice me because of their numbness. I think I’ll keep my hydraulic power steering cars a while longer.

Then there’s the fact that the couple of vehicles I would consider, require me selling one of my cars, and adding an additional $20-40k+. Just to go up 1 generation. The newer generation isn’t THAT much nicer IMO to warrant the extra cost.

What i do is, have a wife, kids and a mortgage and realize that payments on nice and new are ripping off my retirement and not helping the kids wear clothes and not helping us save for vacation. Butost importantly, no matter how awesome and new it is, it still doesnt replace the 79 Volvo 242 i used to love. So nothing replaces that first great car. So how i do it is privately call anyone buying new and not keeping it 10+ years a sucker cause all they do is eat the lions share of depreciation and sell it on and take another big hit on a new car again constantly paying a bank 5% on payments ad infinitum.

Solution? Buy a used corolla for DD work and spend the rest in payments on a Porsche 911 or Ferrari 328 if you feel you have to blow money on cars. They dont depreciate and in fact appreciate and youll enjoy them more.

Not quite at 5 years yet, but I plan to always have my 4Runner around. Why and/or how do like it so much? I’ve just kind of bonded with it to the point that I'm stuck with it.

I've had 4 cars in the past 3 years. Hopefully the current one will stay around. I've had it the longest, and put the most miles on it.

I knew I couldn’t be the only one!

I rarely keep a vehicle for more than 2-3 years, the majority only last a year.

The F150 may be a long term keeper because every little change I make restores my love for it. After putting 20k on it in 13 months it only asked for a battery and tires in return. It’s as loyal as my Labrador.

Seems like horse trading the 3 wheelers has helped settle my Automotive ADD.

I don’t know if I can help you there. I’ve had 7 vehicles in 11 years. Although two of them were totaled... But to be honest, had I not lost my second vehicle some years ago, I would still be driving it today.

I would suggest figuring out what scratches your itch, then work towards it. =)

Any childhood dreams/teenage fantasies that could be fulfilled? If it’s a little out of budget, you could start by building a plan with that as the goal.

I'm assuming you are an average American in terms of salary, so how do you constantly fund your car itch? Do you sell your cars at a profit? Do you buy cars with clean mechanical history? And what about insurance too, constantly adding/removing cars?

Significant depreciation is a choice. Especially if you’re able to do some of the work yourself there’s little reason to buy something that depreciates significantly, other than desiring a new(ish) car.

My DD depreciated maybe €1k total in 3 years and 100k km and minimal non-regular maintenance Peugeot 406 coupe). My €500 rally car (Galant wagon) appreciated €500-€1k after €250 in brakes/suspension parts and a good cleaning. The cars I sold in the last two years were all with profit, despite outsourcing the work they needed.

He’s wanting a lot for that thing! There’s a nice 200x not far from you for around $500. It has a 200s motor which is kinda nice as it has the auto clutch.

I’ve had a licence for 5 years and am already planning on getting my 6th vehicle! Granted this purchase is going to take longer, I’ll be selling the Z in early summer and then probably won’t be looking for an importer until November or so next year, but it’s all worked out

I am below average American salary. I buy used stuff - the most I’ve ever paid for a vehicle was $5000 (a 1996 Ford Bronco XLT 5.8L in 2003). I’ve never owned a vehicle newer than 2000. I fix my own vehicles. I try my best to sell at break-even or better. I only keep liability on my stuff and usually only on one at a time, so insurance doesn’t change. Wisconsin doesn’t charge to transfer plates between vehicles you own, so I only keep one set of valid plates and transfer them between cars.

Oh yeah, it’s definitely a choice, I made it knowing full well about the depreciation and am mostly enjoying the new car experience.
